Essential New Mama Skills

Did you know there is a skill involved in eating reheated, cold leftovers with one hand? Yes, the leftovers were reheated, and yes, they are cold again. Because the baby needed a diaper change or an outfit change or an attitude change…so now you get to eat cold leftovers with one hand. Because your other hand is busy holding the baby. The cold-reheated-leftovers-with-one-hand skill is not for the faint of heart.

Another skill I’ve mastered is performing-ordinary-tasks-at-extraordinary-speeds. You would too if your baby only slept 45 minutes at a time. Ever try to get dressed, eat breakfast, clean it up, sweep the floors, mop the floors, and write a blog post in 45 minutes? You learn to move fast unless you want to get so far behind in your day that you’re eating dinner the next morning.

Or how about this one? I call it putting-on-your-clothes-one-hour-at-a-time. This morning I had started to get dressed when the baby woke up. I had only gotten as far as putting a cute top on. So I did what any self respecting mama would do: stayed in my cute top, left my pajama pants on, and crawled back into bed to nurse the baby. So comfy. I love my bed. I didn’t remember to put real pants on till 11am. No wonder I was so comfortable all morning.

Scrapbook paper for non-scrappers

Hello, my name is Ali, and I’m addicted to scrapbook paper.

And not for the purpose it was intended.

I love the paper, I even love the little scrapbooking supplies, but I don’t love scrapbooking. Nope. Never could get into it.

So I have to get creative to find reasons to indulge my paper passion. Because, folks, I LOVE me some scrapbook paper.

Remember the elephant art?

That was such a fun “getting ready for baby” project. AND I got to buy like 12 new pieces of paper.

I wish I could decorate Amelia’s whole room in scrapbook paper. Here’s my latest addition to her paper collection

It wasn’t finished in this picture, but you get the idea. Lil Miss Amelia woke up before I could finish it. Now it’s finished, but still waiting to be hung in her room. Crafty projects are s-l-o-w around here these days. But I’m thankful for the little time that I do get to indulge in them.

Speaking of thankful, here’s my “The Best of My Days” for the last few days.

  • Jan 12 – Dinner and JoAnn’s with Sarah. So nice to get out of the house and laugh
  • Jan 13 – Forgot to write anything down. Can not remember one thing about that day. Oops.
  • Jan 14 – Early bedtime for Amelia, hot bath with a book for me.

So, how are your days?

“The Best of My Days”

I saw this idea over on AshleyAnn’s blog and I may just have to copy it. While I probably won’t make a cute little notebook like she did, I will jot down a note somewhere (probably on the computer, maybe even here on the blog).

The idea is simply to write down the best part of each day. Sounds like a good lesson in gratitude to me. Many of my days are….well, the same. I wake up, take care of the baby, take care of the house, try to get dinner made by a decent hour, and then put the baby and myself to bed. Every day. There aren’t too many variations on that theme. Well, sometimes I do laundry.

But it’s the little moments in there that count. Last night Amelia laughed. For real. Over and over. That was the best part of my day. Even if she is only taking 45 minute naps this week. Even if we are stuck in the house (again) ¬†because of the snow. That laugh made my whole day. It may make my whole week. I want to remember it.
