How to live a simpler, more complicated life

Self-sufficient living. Urban (or suburban) homesteading. Back to the land. Sustainable living. Green. Organic. Local.

Are you familiar with these terms? Some of them are pretty trendy right now. Others were trendy in the 60’s and 70’s. Many of these phrases and words evoke images of peaceful fields of grain, ripe tomatoes, and cute little baby animals.

Lies.  All lies.

Living “simple” is not simple at all.  It’s hard work. It requires more time and energy than living a modern life. But I think it’s worth it. I like doing the things the hard way.  Here are a few ways you can simplify (ha) your life.

Make yogurt.  It’s easy. Only takes 6-9 hours.

Make bread, rolls, pizza dough, etc.  Only takes 1-3 hours.

Make Laundry Soap. Takes 2-3 hours.

Make dishwasher soap. This is an easy one to make, but it sure doesn’t work very well.

Make toothpaste. Easy and….salty.

Buy Local. Only takes a nice drive into the country (or farmers market) and more money than you would spend at the grocery store.

Mmmm. Can’t be mad at fresh eggs, though.  Just look at those beauties.
